Our
first branch in Coxhoe was a rented property in Sanderson
Street (but not on the present site), which opened in 1942.
The first Pharmacist was Mr. Jack Oxley. Records show that
this branch took £9 in its first week of trading.
1
Sanderson Street was purchased in 1949, and the Pharmacy
relocated there. The
picture shows Church Street in the 1950s with our 'Chemist'
on the left at 1, Sanderson Street.

In
1961, the Grocery shop at 1/1A Church Street was purchased
(the shop just left of centre in the picture). Between
1961 and 1963, extensive building works joined 1 Sanderson
Street with 1 Church Street to form the present shop which
spans both main streets. 1A Church Street was converted
into the Pharmacist Manager's house. The Pharmacist at
this time was Mr. Vernon Kirk.
In
1971, an Optical Department was opened above the Sanderson
Street section of the property. Grundy and Naisbitt
Optometrist still has its practice there, and
you can find out more about this on the website at [www.jwgrundy.co.uk].
In
1995, the Disability Aids supplier, Adapt-ABILITY was
established in what had been the manager's house at 1A
Church Street. Visit their website by clicking [here].
